Course you can go cheap and pick up a radeon 8500 le from newegg.com for $98 if you live in the US. Then just pick up one of the new next gen ati or nvidia cards once the price has dropped a bit or a good Xmas sale.

GeForce4_MX does NOT have the programmable vertex and pixel shaders found in GeForce3 and GeForce4 (not that games are using them yet anyway). The MX is a souped-up GeForce2 core combined with the GeForce4 FSAA unit and a new video processing unit not present in the true GeForce4. The GeForce4 4200/128mb is in about the same price range as the MX and is more future-proof, as it has exactly the same features as the top-of-the-line 4600.
